What is the Chin Implant procedure?
A small or recessed chin can make someone less attractive both in the frontal and the side profile views or make a nose appears too large and throw off the balance of one’s facial features.
A chin implant also know as chin augmentation surgery or mentoplasty, strengthens the appearance of your chin, helping to create a well-defined profile. The aim of the procedure is to address your concerns about a recessed chin.
The outcome of a chin implant procedure has a strong impact on the appearance and balance of the overall facial features.
The type of implant our surgeons prefers to use is known as an extended anatomic implant made of silicone (soft silicone or Gore-Tex). Silicone is the ideal material because it does not compress, stays very stable, and is easily removable. The chin implant, once done, is a permanent solution that provides a lifetime of enjoyment.
To further strengthen your profile, additional procedures may be combined. Common procedures that can enhance chin implant results are rhinoplasty and neck lift.
Before the Chin Implant
The motivations and requests of the patient will be analysed during the preoperative consultation with the surgeon.
No medication containing aspirin should be taken within 10 days before surgery.
Stopping smoking is obligatory before surgery.
Anaesthesia for Chin Implant
Usually the procedure is done with a local anesthetic depth by tranquilizers administered intravenously.
How long does Chin Implant take?
The procedure is pretty fast and takes generally 45 minutes to one hour to perform.
How visible will Chin Implant scars be?
Placing a chin implant involves making an incision just beneath the chin in a natural skin crease.
A very small incision is made, which may be located under the chin area or on the inside of the mouth along the lower lip. Your surgeon will create a “pocket” in the tissue over the jawbone and insert an implant of the appropriate size and shape.
The incision will then be closed, and the chin may be taped.
What is the recovery time healing process for a Chin implant surgery ?
After the chin implant procedure, you will have some mild to moderate swelling that can make it socially unattractive for a few 10 days.
Swelling may initially make facial movements such as smiling and talking difficult. If incisions are made on the inside of the mouth, dietary restrictions may be required.
You may also experience some discomfort during the first week of recovery, which can be alleviated with prescription pain medication.
If your surgeon uses surface stitches instead of dissolvable sutures, he will remove them five to seven days after the surgery.
You can return work and resume to normal activities 10 days after the surgery.
Two to three weeks after the surgery your body will acclimate to the presence of the chin implant and you will then not notice its presence.
How long after a Chin Implant do you start seeing results?
Three weeks is required to have a good overview of the result, knowing that the final appearance will be obtained 3 months after the surgery.
